I Go Outside With My Lantern: A Lantern Walk Song

My daughter's kindergarten teacher sang "I go outside with my lantern," the main Lantern Walk song, so that people could learn the words and tune before Martinmas. The sheet music you see is one version of the song, but the lyrics listed below are the ones that my daughter's kindergarten class sings.

Here are the words:

I go outside with my lantern, my lantern goes with me
Above the stars are shining bright, down here on Earth shine we.
The cock does crow, the cat meows, la bimmel, la bammel, la boom.
‘Neath heaven’s dome till we go home, la bimmel, la bammel, la boom.

I go outside with my lantern, my lantern goes with me
Above the stars are shining bright, down here on Earth shine we.
So shine your light through the still dark night, la bimmel, la bammel, la boom
‘Neath heaven’s dome till we go home, la bimmel, la bammel, la boom.

Vivian: I'm so glad you like it. You definitely planted the seed for starting an off-shoot blog.

Beth: You can find a sample here, though keep in mind that my voice is still a work in progress.:)

OMG! My mother sang this song to us in German when we were little..."Laterne, laterne, sonne, mond und sterne....." we used to parade around the backyard with paper lanterns and then eat the sweet rolls she baked. I love that it is translated into English! I will forward this post to her :)
Thanks so much for the memories!

Kim: I'm so pleased! Thanks for telling me about your memories. As you can tell, I don't update this blog all that often, but I intend for it to be a resource when I do update just for this purpose.

Beautiful recording! Thank you so much for sharing, I love this song. We sang it at our lantern walk this evening and now I can revisit the beauty of this night. I hope you do not mind that I included a link on my blog post for others to find your sweet music. Many blessings!

Thank you so much for posting this! We celebrated St. Martin's with a lantern walk and coat drive at Scriber Lake Park on Sunday, and thanks to you we had a magical moment all singing this song as we gathered together on the floating bridges over the bog...So lovely! Thank you. Here's a recap of our night if you are interested in how it went: http://stitchcraftymama.blogspot.com/2010/11/lantern-walk-photos-and-recap.html

It gratifies me that this resource continues to be helpful. It will be two years since I've been on a lantern walk (though one reader kindly invited me to her school's lantern walk). I won't miss the chill, but I will miss the procession of lights. I remember the kindergarten teacher merrily calling out, "The wind fairies are being naughty tonight!" as we grownups stoically attempted to relight the lanterns.
